Police say they are not forcing landlords of Manchester pubs to shut their pubs on Sunday - but would like them to.
Officers have sent booklets to licensees of pubs near to Old Trafford which talk about public safety ahead of United's FA Cup third round home tie with Leeds.
However, Greater Manchester Police Supt John Graves said the force is not ordering pubs not to sell alcohol.
He said: "We are not ordering anyone not to sell alcohol but have been working closely with Manchester United, Leeds United and licensed premises to make them aware of our concerns.
"We are working to limit the opportunity for people to drink excessively before the game to reduce the impact we know alcohol can sometimes have and to ensure the game passes off peacefully.
"On the whole the responses have been very positive and supportive."
